How to verify an insurance agent

Every insurance agent is licensed by the state they sell in, and the state keeps the record. Checking it takes a minute, and you don't need the agent's help.

Check the licence with the state

Ask the agent for their licence number or their National Producer Number (NPN). A licensed agent can give you either straight away.

Then look them up on the official record for your state, not through a link the agent sends you.

Check the NPN

The NPN is one number that follows an agent across every state they're licensed in. The NAIC's multi-state lookup searches by NPN or by name.

What the record should show

  • The same name the agent gave you.
  • A licence that is active, not expired or suspended.
  • Your state, if they're selling to you where you live.
  • The right line of insurance: life, health, property and casualty are separate.

Red flags

  • They can't or won't give you a licence number or an NPN.
  • The name on the record doesn't match the person you're talking to.
  • You're asked to pay into a personal account, with gift cards, or by a payment app.
  • You're pushed to decide right now, before you've seen anything in writing.

If the record doesn't match, don't go ahead. Your state's insurance department can tell you more, and takes reports.

If the agent sent you an Aicopack page

On an Aicopack page, “Identity verified with a government ID” means one thing: the agent scanned a government-issued ID and took a live selfie, Stripe Identity checked them, and the name on the ID matched the name on the page.

It isn't a licence check. Aicopack doesn't check licences: every licence on the page opens the state's own record so you can check it yourself.

The page lists the states the agent says they're licensed in. Each one opens the official lookup, the same one linked from this guide.

What an Aicopack page shows

Aicopack is a tool agents use to publish a page you can check. It isn't an insurance company or a brokerage, and it doesn't sell you anything.
